I Am Number 4: Movie Review Time

We are in the post Twilight and Harry Potter Age. As the last film in the Harry Potter series and Twilight Saga, filmmakers are scrambling to find the next Harry Potter film. The first candiate is a film about a alien boy who made his way to planet earth. He sojourned in Ohio and found a local girl. He gets into these brawls involving Football jocks and Alien exterminators. The Football captain fights with him over the girl. It sounds familar, right. Twilight is a little bit like that as well. However, this film does not focus too much on the romance, but on the spirit o teamwork and friendship. Even though I Am Number Four is both filled with action and romance, there is nothing too new in this film.

The digital effects were over the top. There are flying cars and magical powers. These magical powers include protecting yourself in a fire explosion or glowing hands. Glowing hands is useful in a fight against the alien exterminators, but it is a little embarrassing in class.

The romantic relationship between our protagonist and the local girl gets complicated when her ex-boyfriend beats up everybody who tries to talk to her. He gets into fights or brawls at the local carnival. Although, the fights were easy for him because he has magical powers.

The film can be a little bit graphic or scary because the battles happens in the dark. In the morning, we see fights that could potentially occur in any high school in the United States. (That is excluding WW-P North or South. )

The story also takes on a more emotional side. Think about Harry Potter and recall when Dumbledore died. There is a similar scene in this movie too. That scene can be a little bit hackneyed or banal or corny.

The story ends like most book based movies. It ends with the good guy winning and the bad guy is toppled. However, there is cliff-hanger at the end which prepares for a sequel.

This film invests a lot of money on acting an special effects;however, the story is like a repeat of Harry Potter, Twilight, Eragon, and Narnia. The film would do great in the opening weekend, but the film would last for more than one month on the top ten box office list. It is worth a watch on DVD. Not a store bought DVD, but one from redbox or netflix.
