Things to do during Winter Break
Winter break is the week between semesters where we enjoy our free time by spending time with our family and friends. During winter break, we usually go and have fun at the movies or on the ski slopes. However, we should all remember that we can also go to museums or read books—learning doesn’t stop just because school is closed for break.
For example, the Cleopatra exhibition at the Franklin Institute is a magnificent exhibit that includes a lot of the relics that were recently discovered in the Mediterranean Sea. Some of those relics include the giant statues of Egyptian gods and statues of Cleopatra’s family life. The exhibition is made complete by including things that Cleopatra used during her rein as the last queen of Egypt. The Cleopatra exhibition may not be as famous as the King Tut exhibit, but in Egyptian history, Cleopatra is just as famous as Tutankhamen, and the exhibit itself is certainly worth seeing.
Before seeing this exhibition, I only knew a few superficial facts about Queen Cleopatra. After viewing the exhibition, I was able to understand her love life and her family. I understood her rule over Egypt and how Egypt fell to the Roman Empire after Cleopatra’s death. The statues of Cleopatra and of her children were created carefully, with a lot of emphasis on the facial features. Unfortunately, because of this, I was unable to take photographs in the exhibition halls.
If you’re not interested in going to see a museum exhibit, perhaps a book will interest you. The Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger is a novel about the coming-of-age of a sixteen-year-old boy. The main character, Holden Caulfield, has many problems, like the inability to control his anger and his addiction to alcohol. This is unlike a book by Mark Twain or Charles Dickens; it is a novel about a teenager maturing into an adult. Holden has always been acted like a child in the body of an adult, and has trouble connecting with people because they treat him poorly.
The story of The Catcher in the Rye is extremely relatable for teenagers like me because of the sarcastic nature of the main character and his relationships with other people. The novel makes me feel like I’m there with Holden when he drops out of school and wanders the city instead of returning home. The Catcher in the Rye is a great book because it perfectly captures the transition from teenager to adult through Holden’s adventures.
Reading and going to museums are my favorite activities during winter break because they make learning enjoyable. Of course, because not everybody enjoys museums or reading, this article just presents some options.

Disney gets Tangled up
Rapunzel is the latest princess added to the Disney princesses’ collection. She is the star of the new Disney animated movie, Tangled, the Disney adaptation of the original story Rapunzel. This story takes you on a magical journey where two people, who have just met each other, fall in love while on an adventure. Although it is much more cliché compared to all the other Disney movies, Tangled is the best Disney movie that I have seen this year.
The soundtrack is one of many reasons why Tangled is such a great film. The music adds emotion while still remaining appropriate for the plotline. When Rapunzel sings, the song creates a poignant moment that adds another dimension to the movie. Like most Disney classics, the movie is more than a musical, with singing that is much more spontaneous. Normally, the singing in musicals is awkward compared with the story or plot. The music in Tangled is both heart-warming and happy, bringing joy to this romantic action-adventure film.
Not only is the music great, but the animals within the story are personified well. Maximus, the horse, is a particularly good example of this. He is smart, and can cope with any situation, hide himself, and ambush Flynn. These human-like characteristics also include the abilities to shake “hands”, fight, and search for lost things. However, as an animal, Maximus does not talk; instead, he uses his actions to convey his thoughts emotions. Pascal, the frog that stays on Rapunzel’s shoulder, is another example of a personified animal. From the beginning to the end, Pascal acts as a friend and a guide to Rapunzel. He is the friend that makes sure Rapunzel is safe and the “person” that makes sure that Flynn Rider is telling the truth. He acts like a human when he “talks” to Rapunzel, but he’s still an animal. Like Maximus, Pascal does not talk and uses actions to express thoughts; for example, his eyes bulge when he detects that Flynn is lying. Well-personified animals, namely Maximus and Pascal, add a lot to the likability of the film.
Then there are the great visual effects. Ever since the popularity of television and movies took hold, studios have been trying to produce films with better resolutions. Disney has taken the lead—the lantern scene makes the movie look more realistic than animated. Its high resolution lights up the scene and also makes it look more romantic. In addition, the hair was computer-drawn, but, impressively, its appearance is very convincing.
Tangled has everything that you expect to see in a film produced by Disney. You’ll certainly enjoy Tangled, the last Disney Princess movie.

Hairspray
It's the 1960s in Baltimore , Maryland and Tracy just woke up with a cute song. Tracy is just an average student with a talent for singing,dancing and acting. Hairspray entertained me with its acting , dancing, and singing.
This musical styled movie entertained me with its hilarious actors and actresses and their singing and dancing.The dancing and the singing combined with the historical civil rights movements adds conflict , but it still does not have a strong story. I do enjoy the love story between Tracy and Link and the hilarious scene where Tracy's mother exit the house for the first time and she starts to enjoy the dancing. This Bollywood style movie with dancing and singing in the story is boring for the majority of the movie. There was not much conflict, comedy, or exciting action scenes.
However this movie did enlighten me on the power of music and how it can change people's lives by working and playing in a desegregated area. It also showed me how music can bring different racial groups together.

The Diary of a wimpy Kid
"Middle school is the dumbest thing ever invented" says Greg Haffley.Young Greg Haffley is entering Middle school and he's the only one that hasn't really changed. Everybody else changed their physical looks and matured into teenagers while Greg is still the same kid from last year. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a movie about life in Middle school and how it can influence your life forever. This movie was funny, creative and very true.
Middle School is when kids are not kids, but their not adults yet, so things become awkward and strange. This movie is unique because rarely would we see a movie about middle school and this movie really captured the experience of being in Junior high. Junior High school is when we are treated more like adults, but they still care for us like children.
When I was in Middle school, we were given lockers and we would were on our own about fifty percent of the time and the other fifty was with a teacher or lunch aide. The experience of middle school really helped me to be successful in High School and this movie captured that moment.
The funniest part of the movie was the cheese on the blacktop.Whenever somebody touched the cheese, the other kids would avoid that person. They are growing up to be like adults,but they still act like kids. Adults would say,"Who cares if he touched the cheese? He can always wash his hands and the germs would be washed down the drain". However kids are scared of things that they don't understand and they deviate from those things.
The Diary of a Wimpy is another movie about a kid in school, but it is better than Mean Girls. It holds the element of surprise that anything can happen in Middle school because a person's appearance change and personality change can be conflicts. Greg and Rowley are best friends , but Greg is afraid that Rowley is too childish. Greg moves apart from Rowley and they stopping talking to each other for a while, but eventually they made up and hugged. Their relationship as best friends is the conflict and resolution of the film.
The film is about how Greg and Rowley overcomes Middle school and eventually be successful in High school.

The Last Song
The Last Song written by a father to a daughter is always very touching. This movie is built around the relationships of father and daughter, friends and friends, and Ronny and Wil. This movie may not have be the best movie, but it is a movie that that has a great story,great actors, and a steady plot line.
The Last Song's story revolves around Ronny and her relationship with her father because she has gone through a turbulent teenage time period. Ronny is a teenager that kept her emotions about her father to herself at first, but she soon realizes that her father needs her love. Her father got stuck in a blaze at the old church because he was working on a new song for Ronny. The beautiful song that he wrote was beautifully played by Ronny( Miley Cyrus)and it reflects their relationship together as a family.
The acting in The Last Song is not bad and is actually pretty good. Most of the Actors expand upon the emotions of the characters that they play. They played a role that convinced us that the actor and the character is one and the same. Miley Cyrus touched our hearts with the song that she sang and the life that she played as Ronny.
The plot line is typical of a drama story,but it was very interesting to see Ronny and Wil helping her little brother. I enjoyed this movie and it definitely made my day when I watched it on the plane.
This movie incorporates a great story that is written by Nick Sparks and it showed us more to life in Florida.
